Speaker biography: In a varied career, I have been a technology evangelist, a mathematics lecturer, a professional astronomer, a software developer and a database administrator. I've been using and managing MySQL databases actively for ten years at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, one of the world’s leading genome research centres. I'm part of a small team of DBAs who look after more than two hundred MySQL, Oracle, Postgres and SQL Server databases at the Institute. My non-DBA interests include astronomy, genealogy, cats, American history and single-malt Islay whiskies.
